Our trip

Our first destination was Bangkok - because there are cheap flights to get there. Without wasting much time in the touristy Kao San Rd and similar places we headed for the Cambodian border.

After and adventurous journey on the back of a pickup we reached Angkor Wat and felt like Indiana Jones climbing over ancient temples in the rainforest.

Via Phnom Penh we continued to Saigon and along the Vietnamese coast north to Hanoi. On the way we saw many remaining of the Vietnam War - but not a single American tourist...

Compared to Cambodia travelling was easy in Vietnam. Cafes often offer inexpensive private buses for daytrips or commuting along the coast.

Lonely Planet. THE guidebook for the DIY-traveller. You can hardly go anywhere without it's detailed description of hostels, restaurants, bus tables - only it's a little weak on background information.
